Discontinued & Substantially Modified Booklets-- Scot KaminsThere are about 1883 numbered booklets in the various Haldeman-Julius numbered series. (The highest numbered booklet is 1915, but 32 numbers went unused.) But the series actually has more than 300 additional variations. This article lists these variations, which make a fine specilized highly collectible area. The variations are in four areas:
Not covered here are booklets whose titles were changed but whose content was essentially the same -- for example, Whitman #73a Walt Whitman's Poems, #73b Poems of Walt Whitman, and #73c Best Poems of Walt Whitman). Doubtless other booklets will appear in the third category as variations in length and content are uncovered in various editions of the proverbs, epigrams, and other subseries. These lists were synthesized from information contained in The Haldeman-Julius "Little Blue Books" as a Bibliographical Problem by Richard Colles Johnson & G. Thomas Tanselle, the Axe Library's Checklist of Little Blue Books, and from comparisons of booklets in my own collection. As usual, your comments and corrections are solicited. |
